Arts Unbound Will Feature Exhibition of Art Work By Artists with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Contact Person: Gail Levinson, 973 675 2787

Arts Unbound, a professional studio and gallery specializing in visual arts training for individuals with disabilities and The Daniel Jordan Fiddle Foundation, a national autism organization with the mission to develop, advocate for and support programs benefiting adolescents and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) have collaborated on a year-long art training program that will culminate in exhibitions of artwork by the program participants that will also be available for sale at the events. The kick-off reception for this traveling exhibition will be held at the Arts Unbound Gallery located at 544 Freeman Street, Orange, New Jersey from noon until 5 pm on Saturday, February 13, 2010. The exhibition will travel to the Ridgewood YMCA located in Ridgewood, New Jersey beginning Thursday, April 1st with a reception sponsored by Whole Foods. The Daniel Jordan Fiddle Foundation (DJF) Program at Arts Unbound that was co-developed by DJF and Arts Unbound was then funded by a grant award of $24, 400 from the foundation. The program created the opportunity for adults with ASD to explore and refine their artistic talents under the guidance of the studio’s professional artists. Consisting of three weekly classes, two held at the Arts Unbound studio and one held at the Ridgewood YMCA, it incorporated a vocational component for some of the participants who worked as studio assistants. “When Linda Fiddle, Executive Director of The Daniel Jordan Fiddle Foundation, approached us to expand our curriculum with specific training for artists with ASD and to offer it at another location, we were excited to add this to our programming,” said Gail Levinson, Executive Director of Arts Unbound. “It is our goal to share this successful model and curriculum with other arts programs throughout the United States who may not currently be serving adults with ASD,” adds Linda Fiddle,” we want to show them the strengths and talents of those on the spectrum and encourage them to develop programs that lead to more opportunities for adults.” The exhibition will also include selections of artwork by emerging and established artists with developmental disabilities as well as an assortment of Valentine’s Day gifts and greeting cards by the artists. Proceeds from the sale of the artwork will go the artists and support programming for them. The general public is invited to attend, free of charge.
